Default English Major

Hello all,

Just wanted to let you all know more about the English major at UCLA in case this helps anyone.

First of all I chose this major after trying out computer science. Haha yeah I know, it's a BIG switch, but I really like English now. It teaches you so much about human nature and you really come out of it knowing how to think on your feet. This major greatly deepens your appreciation not just for literature but all artistic creation. It will expand not just your ability to efficiently communicate but will also enable you to communicate well and on all levels. This is also a great undergraduate major for anyone interested in going into law or seminary school amongst other fields of graduate study.

I personally chose this major because I love the thrill of seeing connections. There is no greater joy than recognizing a universal or individual truth in a work of literature and having it appear in your everyday life. I also want to become a better writer and ultimately to write my own books, so that I also may be able to influence the generations that come after me.

So if anyone else is interested in English I highly recommend the undergraduate program here at UCLA. Someone told me that we have the best undergraduate English program. I'm not sure if that's true, but I definitely think that it is way up there. In general, a good majority of the textbooks we use here at UCLA are written by the professors that teach the class! I think that's quite indicative of their qualification and ability to teach us and to teach us well. The English teachers here are especially good. They're extremely witty and they know how to engage their students. They tend to make themselves available inside and outside of the classroom and I personally have learned SO MUCH from them. The prerequisite classes here definitely give you a good taste of all literature across the board, while the upper division classes allow students to pinpoint specific authors, works, or literary periods to study according to their interests.

In conclusion, if you like to write, if you like to analyze, if you love discussing human nature/behavior, then English is for you!
