PC Keyboard keys not controlling game!

Hi guys,

This is my first ever post and i am so NOT technical you wouldn't believe, so any in depth technical advice will go straight over my head.

If you are kind enough to reply then I would request the advice is as simple as you could make it please?

I have downloaded a game. It seems to have loaded perfectly.
The instructions advise me to move the characters by pressing WASD or the arrow keys. Neither work.
It says I should be able to exit the game by using ESC. Doesn't work. In fact, pressing any key on the keyboard has no effect.

We run Windows XP, and I don't have any type of gamepad.

I am so disappointed as the game took 14 hours to download and I was really looking forward to playing it.

If you can help me with this Compaq Laptop Keyboard problem , I would really appreciate it.
